Published: April 6 2006 18:00 | Last updated: April 6 2006 18:00 Not for Depeche Mode the 1980s nostalgia circuit so many of their new romantic peers are reduced to. Instead of hen parties and middle-aged fans, the audience at this London show brimmed with youths sporting a profusion of tattoos and piercings, a tribute not only to the band’s longevity but also to their reinvention as doomy alternative rockers.

Their drift away from new romanticism began when Vince Clarke, a member of the original line-up, left to form Yazoo and then Erasure in the early 1980s, taking with him the buoyant synth-pop of hits such as “Just Can’t Get Enough”. The band’s sound grew darker, as did their lifestyle: Dave Gahan, the singer, almost died of a heroin overdose in 1996. Now clean and sober, Gahan looked fantastic on stage: muscled, sleek, his gestures as dramatic as his baritone vocals, like an unholy cross between Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and U2’s Bono. His sidekick Martin Gore, who alternated between guitar and keyboards, wore black angel wings and a curious mohican-shaped headpiece, a look that summed up the narrow line Depeche Mode tread between moodiness and preposterousness. Much of the material they played from their recent album Playing the Angel was lacklustre, though old hits such as “Personal Jesus” added lustre to the evening. This was gloom as mass entertainment: Sturm und Drang stadium rock.

|  Eighties pop band Depeche Mode are back in the singles chart and have been talking about their current tour. They were the first act to headline at the recently reopened Wembley Arena, and say they are still getting a buzz off touring. Martin Gore said: "Some of the audiences, even in the indoor arenas, have been huge. "We played to like 48,000 in Copenhagen....of course you get a big adrenaline buzz." On their comeback, he said: "The whole European tour sold out six months before the first date and that was before we even released an album. You can't hope for better than that, 25 years on." Andy Fletcher added: "And the band itself is getting on well. We had a great year making the album and this has been really good. The mood in the camp is very good." The third leg of the group's tour starts April 27th in the US.

Depeche Mode are proud to announce an exciting new collaboration with Live Here Now that will see 50 dates on their current world tour recorded and released as limited edition CD's and digital downloads.
Depeche Mode will play to more than two and a half million people across 31 countries during the "Touring The Angel" 2005/6 World Tour.
Recording will begin at the legendary Shoreline Amphitheater in California, where the band headline on Thursday, April 27th. After numerous dates across the United States, Depeche Mode return to Europe for a series of stadium shows and festival appearances throughout the summer.
Each concert will be recorded and mixed, giving fans a unique high-quality souvenir that truly captures the energy and atmosphere of the legendary Depeche Mode live experience. The two-disc set is available for a limited time and is packaged with deluxe artwork featuring new and exclusive photographs by Anton Corbijn. Fans can order at the venue on the night or online.
Live Here Now was established in 2004 to produce legal official concert recordings and offers a legitimate alternative to widespread live music piracy. Their clients to date include Moby, Goldfrapp, Mylo, Erasure, Heaven 17 and Throbbing Gristle.

| Online music store 7 Digital is offering live recordings of Depeche Mode’s new tour as digital downloads, launching a new voucher system for gig goers in the process. 7 Digital will make the 50 live concert recordings by Depeche Mode available in digital and physical formats - kicking off in the US on 27 April at Shoreline Amphitheatre in California. Each concert will be recorded and mixed, then offered as a physical 2 CD set or as a download bundle online featuring the entire set as played on the night. The Depeche Mode gigs will see the first use of 7 Digital’s voucher system, letting gig-goers buy a voucher at the event allowing them to access the live album in physical or digital formats by entering a code on the site. 7 Digital have provided French, Spanish and German language versions to meet demand from Depeche Mode’s worldwide fanbase. The store supports sales in sterling, euro and dollar currencies, facilitates pre-orders of the recordings and supports the physical fulfilment of the CDs. | Depeche Mode: 'John The Revelator' This latest single is a most peculiar departure for Depeche Mode. 'John The Revelator' showcases a vocal that is, if you listen carefully, remarkably similar to Elvis'. Its fabulously jerky rhythm combines with the retro-sound vocals, incorporating thick electronic noise to form a stonking single. Although you wouldn't go as far as to call it "goth gospel", there are clear religious undertones thanks to the title, but the track's main focus is not on its lyrics, and what message it can convey to the listener, but rather to making you want to jump around and dance to its funky sounds.

For each Depeche Mode ticket purchased, Live Nation will send the holder one voucher to any Live Nation show in the Kansas City area and one piece of Depeche Mode merchandise. To claim your voucher, you must send an address plus information from your Depeche Mode ticket stub (seat location, purchasing information) to guestrelationskc@livenation .com. Further questions can be answered at that e-mail address. In addition, Live Nation is donating $10,000 to establish the Music Cares Fund, an endowment that will help buy new instruments for students in the Kansas City School District. The Depeche Mode show at Starlight was cut short after vocalist Dave Gahan left the stage about 35 minutes into the show.

DEPECHE MODE rocker MARTIN GORE was once left speechless after a fan presented each member of the group with a specially made band 'Bible'. The PERSONAL JESUS musician cites the religious piece of art as the strangest gift ever given to the British stars. He tells London magazine Time Out, "All of us were each given a Depeche Mode 'Bible' once. This is going back a bit, so it had four testaments: of DAVE (GAHAN), ANDREW (FLETCHER), ALAN (WILDER) and Martin. "But the whole thing was really well done. It had a metal cover, and was quite thick; there were lots of pictures in it... it was very Biblical-like."
